Mr. Potatohead, Executioner

October 30, 2007

Cartoonist E-tailer Rick London, www.ricklondonwear.com,  says there appears to be some confusion over whether in his cartoon “Fry Him”, Mr. Potatohead is the executioner or the executed.  In the offbeat singl-panel cartoon, there are two Mr. Potatoheads, and one french fry (sitting in the electric chair).  Known for his offbeat, sometimes dark humor, London says, “I’ll never tell. I think most folks can figure it out.”

London adds,  “And don’t go around saying I’m making some kind of political statement because I am not.  Our cartoons are quite generic and focus on puns and silly wordplay and the fact that capital punishment happens to be the theme of this Mr. Potatohead cartoon, has nothing to do with my own thoughts on the topic. It has to do with my thoughts on how to make a funny cartoon product out of a Mr. Potatohead parody.”

And funny he does do.  On t-shirts,  jerseys, mousepads,  tote bags,  aprons, and more, London  creates his own line of  cartoon casual fashionware, possibly the only type in the marketplace.

Silly Tiger Woods Pun Turns Into Hot Clothing Line

October 27, 2007

Cartoonist E-tailer Rick London (www.ricklondonwear.com) announced today that several years ago, he came up with a “silly pun cartoon” regarding his favorite golfer, Tiger Woods. Tiger had grown up within 25 miles of London, and though they were not the same age (London is 53), London followed his career as closely as he could and admired his talent and tenacity.

“I do cartoons so I thought about Tiger and said ‘why not?’.”

London said he never knew the silly Tiger pun would turn into such popular products such as t-shirts, mousepads, totes, jerseys, aprons, and other gifts and clothes.

London said, “I had no idea how many ‘Tiger Collectors’ there were out there. Orders are coming in worldwide as fast as we can fill them. Feels great to know my neighbor did so well!”

Picasso Peanuts Snoopy Parody. Can They Do That?

October 19, 2007

Cartoonist E-entrepreneur Rick London (www.ricklondonwear.com), sits in his Hot Springs, Ar. studio dreaming up new ideas for his massive cartoon site boasting 8500+ images drawing 7.8 million visitors since 2005.  His Londons Times Cartoon site was established in 1997.

He smiles and says, “One of my greatest influences, besides Gary Larson, was Charles Schulz.  I remember reading Schulz’s autobiography and a great story about a Peanuts parody done by Mad Magazine. Schulz saw it and thought it was so wonderful, he wrote them a thank you and congratulations letter. At the same time, his attorneys (not communicating with him first) shot out an angry copyright infringement letter; that lawyers of celebrities automatically do in such parodies to try to scare the illustrator or creator.”

London says he has a wall-full of such letters but he doesn’t pay them much attention. His great, great, great uncle was Supreme Court Justice Benjamin Cardozo, and, London says, “Not that that gives me carte’ blanche to do the wrong thing, I would never step on someone else’s copyright. I just happen to have studied the Fair Use Act a little more than the ‘average Joe’, and there is a clear difference between parody and copyright infringement.  The argument can go on forever, as there are many shades of gray, but the bottom line is that when we do a Peanuts parody or a Picasso parody, we don’t even pretend to be the creator’s of those products. We make it very clear in the message ‘THIS IS A PARODY”.

Of course there are still some people, including attorneys who “don’t get it”. That’s okay though. This is America and we live in a society that allows for parody. It is a powerful weapon, for instance, against corruption or shenanigans in government.  If parody was not legal, there would never be a Saturday Night Live, National Lampoon, Mad Magazine, ad infinitum.”

London adds, “Though we don’t specialize in parody, our cartoons and cartoon gifts and collectibles are pretty generic offbeat mainstream stuff, we occasionally like to add one or two just to ‘make waves’.”

London manufactures such items as mousepads, t-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, jerseys, coasters and more at his Rick Londonwear www.ricklondonwear.com store.
